    Tokyo

Japan · East Asiaeasy5 days recommended

Tokyo is less a single city than a cluster of distinct cities pressed together, each with its own pace. That sounds overwhelming and occasionally is, but the trains make it manageable: the network is punctual, spotless, and signed in English, and a tap-to-ride IC card on your phone turns the whole map into something you just flow through. Base yourself somewhere central like Shinjuku or Shibuya and the rest of the city is minutes away. Start with the contrasts, because they are the point. Shibuya's scramble crossing and neon are the Tokyo of the imagination; a few stops away, the forested paths of Meiji Shrine are so quiet you forget the crowds exist. Asakusa keeps the old-town feel around Senso-ji temple, while Akihabara is pure electric maximalism. For the best skyline view, skip the paid observation decks and head to a free government-building floor or a rooftop bar at dusk. Food alone justifies the trip. Tokyo runs on precision and specialization: shops that have made one thing for decades, counters with a dozen seats, department-store basements packed with food halls. You can eat superbly for very little at a ramen counter or a conveyor-belt sushi spot, then splurge once on something unforgettable. Convenience stores are a genuine highlight, not a fallback. Give Tokyo four to five days, and treat one of them as a day trip: Nikko for shrines and forest, Kamakura for its giant Buddha and coast, or Hakone for hot springs and Mount Fuji views. The city rewards curiosity over checklists, so leave room to get pleasantly lost in a neighborhood that was not on your plan.
