That single moment explains why travellers have been drawn to Srinagar for well over a century. The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir sits cradled in the Kashmir Valley, ringed by Himalayan peaks, and it trades in a particular kind of unhurried beauty. Dal Lake is the city's living centre. Its houseboats, a legacy of the British era, are floating hotels panelled in walnut wood, and a slow shikara ride at dawn or dusk, past floating vegetable markets and lotus gardens, is the quintessential Srinagar experience. Neighbouring Nigeen Lake offers a quieter, cleaner alternative for those who want the same magic with fewer crowds. On shore, the Mughal emperors left behind some of the finest gardens in South Asia. Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh rise in terraces toward the mountains, their fountains and chinar trees laid out with Persian precision. Climb to Shankaracharya Temple for a sweeping view over the valley, or visit the serene Hazratbal Shrine on the lake's northern shore. In spring, the Tulip Garden erupts into one of Asia's largest tulip displays, a short, spectacular window worth planning a trip around. Srinagar is also a shopper's dream for the right things. This is the home of genuine Pashmina shawls, hand-knotted carpets and delicate papier-mache, all best bought with patience and a little friendly haggling. Fuel up on Kashmiri cuisine along the way: rich, aromatic dishes like rogan josh and the multi-course wazwan feast reward an adventurous appetite. A few notes make the trip smoother. Book houseboats and lakeside stays ahead in peak season, when demand spikes. The valley can be cool even in summer and genuinely cold outside it, so pack warm layers. It is also wise to check current travel advisories and local conditions before you go, and to travel with a reputable local operator who knows the region. Three days is enough to drift on the lake, tour the gardens and shop the old bazaars without feeling rushed, though the surrounding valley, from Gulmarg to Pahalgam, tempts many into staying longer.
