Shillong

They call Shillong the Scotland of the East, and one misty morning over Umiam Lake is all it takes to see why the nickname stuck. Meghalaya's capital sits high in the pine-covered hills of northeast India, where the air stays cool through most of the year and the days unfold at an easy, unhurried pace. This is a city that rewards wandering more than ticking boxes. Start with the water. Elephant Falls tumbles in tiers just outside town, Umiam Lake mirrors the sky for boating and lazy afternoons, and Ward's Lake anchors a genteel garden right in the centre. Climb Shillong Peak for the widest view of the valley, or head to Laitlum Canyon early, before the clouds roll in and swallow the gorge whole. Culture runs just as deep: Shillong is home to the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo peoples, and its live music scene has earned the city a real reputation across India. The real magic, though, often lies just beyond the city limits. Shillong is your springboard to Meghalaya's famous living root bridges, hand-woven from the roots of rubber fig trees over decades, and to some of the cleanest waterfalls and tidiest villages in the subcontinent. Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong are both within reach for day trips or overnight stays. Back in town, Police Bazaar is the beating heart, good for browsing, snacking and people-watching, while the Don Bosco Museum offers a genuinely thoughtful crash course in the region's tribal cultures. Come hungry for Khasi food, smoky pork, rice and fiery chilli chutneys that reward the curious. A cool climate means a light jacket even in summer, and warm layers if you visit in the depths of winter. Roads through the hills are scenic but slow, so build in buffer time and let the journey be part of the trip. Three days is enough to fall for the city and sample a taste of the countryside; a little longer lets you chase root bridges without rushing. Shillong does not shout for your attention. It simply waits, green and quiet, for you to notice how good it feels to breathe up here.
