Krabi

Krabi is the postcard version of southern Thailand made real: towering limestone karsts rising straight out of turquoise water, hidden beaches you can only reach by longtail boat, and a laid-back coastal pace that makes it easy to lose track of what day it is. This province on the Andaman coast is all about the water and the dramatic scenery around it, and it works equally well for adventurers and hammock-dwellers. Most travelers base themselves in Ao Nang, the main beach town, which has the widest range of hotels, restaurants, and boat connections. From its pier, longtails and speedboats fan out to the region's greatest hits. Railay is the star, a peninsula so hemmed in by cliffs that it can only be reached by boat, home to gorgeous beaches, the jungle-backed Phra Nang Cave Beach, and some of Asia's best rock climbing. Even if you have never climbed, the beginner routes here are a thrill. Island-hopping is the other essential. The classic Four Islands and Hong Islands tours deliver snorkeling stops, secret lagoons, and swimming in impossibly clear water, and Krabi is also the mainland jumping-off point for the famous Phi Phi Islands. Book tours for early morning to beat both the heat and the crowds. Back on land, there is more than beach time. Climb the 1,200-odd steps to the Tiger Cave Temple for a sweeping viewpoint, cool off in the Emerald Pool and the nearby hot springs, and feast on fresh seafood at Ao Nang's night markets and beachfront cafes. Three days is a solid baseline: one for Railay, one for an island-hopping tour, and one for the inland temples, pools, and hot springs. Give it more time if you plan to slow down or use Krabi as a hub for the surrounding islands. November to March is the dry season and the best window, with calm seas, sunshine, and reliable boat schedules. The May-to-October monsoon brings rougher water and canceled tours. Krabi rewards travelers who go with the flow: book the boat, chase the tide, and let the karsts and the sea set the agenda. Carry cash for the local tours, slather on the sunscreen, and get ready for scenery that genuinely lives up to the brochures.
