El Nido

El Nido is the reason so many travel dreams involve limestone cliffs and impossibly blue water. On the northern tip of Palawan in the Philippines, this small town opens onto Bacuit Bay, a maze of karst islands, hidden lagoons, and white-sand beaches that regularly tops lists of the world's most beautiful places. The way to see it is by boat, and El Nido has this down to a system: island-hopping tours labeled A, B, C, and D, each covering a different cluster of highlights. Tour A is the classic, taking in the Big Lagoon, the Small Lagoon, and Seven Commandos Beach, where you glide through cathedral-like walls of rock into glassy green water. Tour C is the scenic favorite, with the Hidden Beach, Secret Beach, and the dramatic Matinloc Shrine. Snorkeling over coral, kayaking into lagoons, and beach lunches are all part of the day. Back on the mainland, Nacpan Beach is a long, golden four-kilometer stretch north of town, perfect for a slow day away from the boats. For a view, hike or climb to the Taraw Cliff viewpoint at sunset to see the bay spread out below. The town itself is compact and laid-back, with beachfront restaurants, local grills, and a relaxed bar scene. A few practical notes. El Nido is remote: most travelers fly into Puerto Princesa and take a five-to-six-hour van ride north, or fly into the small El Nido airport directly. The dry season, roughly November to May, brings the calmest seas for island hopping, while the wetter months can cancel tours. Environmental fees apply and tours have daily caps at some sites, so book ahead in peak season. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and cash, as card acceptance is limited. El Nido pairs naturally with Coron to the north, connected by ferry, for a fuller Palawan trip. Give El Nido three to four days to enjoy two island-hopping tours, a mainland beach day, and a sunset viewpoint without rushing.
