There is a reason Darjeeling earned the title Queen of the Hills. Perched high in India's West Bengal, on ridges that look out toward the Himalaya, this old hill station serves up cool mountain air, endless tea gardens, and on clear mornings a jaw-dropping view of Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak. The classic ritual is sunrise at Tiger Hill. Travelers set off before dawn to watch the first light turn the snow peaks gold, with Kanchenjunga front and center and Everest sometimes visible far to the west. It is early and it can be crowded, but on a clear day it is unforgettable. Then there is the tea. Darjeeling's name is practically a byword for fine tea, and touring an estate to learn about plucking, processing, and tasting is a highlight. The rolling green terraces that blanket the hills are as much a part of the scenery as the peaks above them. Do not miss the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site affectionately called the toy train. Its narrow-gauge engines have wound through the hills since the 1880s, and the joy-ride loop past Batasia and Ghum, the highest railway station in India, is a charming way to soak up the landscape. Around town, visit the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park and its neighboring mountaineering institute, the Peace Pagoda, the Rock Garden, and Observatory Hill. A few honest notes. Darjeeling sits at high elevation, so pack warm layers even in summer, since mornings and evenings are chilly year-round. The best mountain views depend heavily on weather, so build in a buffer day to improve your odds of a clear Kanchenjunga sunrise. Roads up from the plains are winding, and the town's lanes are steep and often busy, so wear sturdy shoes and take the altitude gently on arrival. Two to three days lets you catch a sunrise, ride the toy train, tour a tea estate, and still have time to wander the Mall and Chowrasta with a cup of the local brew.
