    Bali

    Indonesia · SEAeasy5 days recommended

Bali packs several very different trips onto one island, and the mistake most first-timers make is trying to do all of them at once. The south (Seminyak, Canggu, Uluwatu) is beaches, surf, and a buzzy cafe-and-sunset scene. Ubud, inland and uphill, is rice terraces, temples, yoga, and jungle. The east and north are quieter, with volcano hikes, black-sand beaches, and the best diving. Pick two of these and give each a few days rather than sleeping in a new place every night; the island's traffic makes constant hopping more tiring than it looks on a map. The culture is what separates Bali from a generic beach holiday. This is a deeply Hindu island of daily offerings, cliffside and lakeside temples, and ceremonies you will stumble into by chance. Dress respectfully at temples (a sarong, shoulders covered) and the experience opens up. Sunrise at a spot like Tirta Empul or a clifftop Kecak dance at Uluwatu stays with you longer than any beach club. Getting around is easiest with a hired driver for day trips or a scooter if you are confident and licensed. Roads are narrow and busy, so plan realistic distances. Food ranges from cheap, delicious local warungs to polished international cafes, and a mix of both keeps costs down while you eat well. The dry season, roughly April to October, is the reliable window for sun, surf, and temple-hopping; the wetter months bring lush green landscapes and short, heavy afternoon showers rather than all-day rain. Give Bali at least five to seven days to enjoy more than one side of the island without living in the car.
